Editor-in-Chief
This first issue of Human Reproduction Update for 2004 seems like the right moment for the Editor-in-Chief1 to evaluate the current status of the journal and outline plans for the near future. This comes after three years in office and as I look forward to a second 3-year term. The best news from 2003 for the journal was that the 2002 impact factor rose considerably to 3.71, rendering Human Reproduction Update the number one journal in the Obstetrical and Gynaecology literature. This will hopefully raise further interest in the journal, both from the readers and authors.

There have been some changes in the board of Associate Editors; two have left (Dr Glasier and Dr Skakkebaek) and several new Associate Editors have joined us during 2003. We would like to welcome Dr Giudice (Stanford, California, USA), Dr Barri (Barcelona, Spain), Dr Crosignani (Milan, Italy), Dr Geraedts (Maastricht, The Netherlands), Dr Lunenfeld (Jerusalem, Israel), and Dr Skouby (Copenhagen, Denmark). We hope that an even more solid coverage of all areas in reproductive medicine by these newly appointed distinguished colleagues will further strengthen the scientific quality and depth of the journal.
During the last year the balance of papers published was around two-thirds invited papers and one-third unsolicited manuscripts. All papers are thoroughly refereed, with past rejection rates varying between 35 and 40% overall. A problem remains to get all the papers submitted in the agreed time frame. For obvious reasons this is extremely important for scheduling and in order to continue to give the journal the wide, balanced scope we have been aiming for. Recently covered topics vary from ethics of human infertility therapies, pharmacology of SERMs, adenomyosis, patient predictors of ovulation induction outcome, sex steroids and bone, molecular endometrial function, stem cells, androgen receptor and male infertility, to implantable contraceptives and germ cell transplantation. In the pipeline we have papers regarding follicular excess and arrest in PCOS, medically assisted reproduction in the presence of viral diseases, abnormal stimulation of the thyrotropin receptor in pregnancy, and characterization of the ovarian transcriptome by differential analysis of gene expression. In the near future we would like to see the following areas covered in Human Reproduction Update; risk factors of osteoporosis, androgen hormone assays, treatment of menopause, metabolic aspects of reproduction in overweight and underweight conditions, oestrogens and breast cancer, steroids and the cardiovascular system, basic studies concerning reproductive ageing (especially premature ovarian failure) and cloning in animals.
The current focus of the journal remains stand-alone, comprehensive, cutting-edge review papers covering the broadest possible area of reproductive medicine. Around 78 papers are published in each issue, and the frequency will remain six issues per year. Most review papers are by invitation, but I would like to continue to encourage potential authors to submit proposals to the editorial office or to me personally (my new e-mail address is b.c.fauser{at}azu.nl), especially in areas still under-represented in the journal, such as basic molecular and genetic reproductive sciences, and clinical areas in reproduction related to andrology, contraception, ageing and hormone replacement therapies. Finally, in an attempt to render the journal more lively, we aim to include editorials with updates and personal views regarding important recent developments. I sincerely hope that readers will continue to enjoy this journal.
