EDITORIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Human Reproduction Update retains its position as the number one ranked Obstetrics & Gynaecology journal in the 2003 ISI Journal Citation Report impact factor ratings
As usual, just before the ESHRE annual
meeting, the newly assessed ISI Journal citation report impact
factors were released. We are extremely pleased to see that
the gradual but steady rise in impact factor of our journal
is being continued (see
Figure 1). In fact,
Human Reproduction Update remains the number one journal in the field of Obstetrics
and Gynaecology with an absolute impact factor of 3.731 for
the year 2003, slightly above that of 2002 (3.710). This also
means that in 2003
Human Reproduction Update for the
first time is the number one journal in the category
Reproductive Biology. We should all be proud of
where we are, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude
to all associate editors and contributors to the journal for
their support during recent years.
This may also be the right time to provide you with some more
detailed information regarding the current status of the journal.
In 2002 the first series of invited stand-alone review papers
were received for evaluation (see
Figure 2). Currently around
35% of the total number of manuscripts received are uninvited.
The current acceptance rate is around 45% for uninvited and
approximately 80% for invited manuscripts. The great majority
of published papers are in the area of clinical reproduction
and reproductive endocrinology (see
Figure 3). Other areas that
do well are reproductive genetics, molecular reproduction and
gamete biology. Fortunately, we can finally observe a rise in
papers in other areas including andrology, contraception and
ageing.
The excellent current impact factor of
Human Reproduction Update seems to suggest that we are on the right track with the revised
scope of the journal focusing on stand-alone, comprehensive
review papers covering all areas of reproductive medicine. This
wide scope of papers together with the firm affiliation of the
journal with a very active and successful ESHRE society, supported
by numerous countries all over the world, assures a wide readership
within the clinical and laboratory community. It should, however,
be realised that the 2003 data reflect the frequency that papers
published in the years 2001 and 2002 were cited in 2003 (in
fact 444 citations of 119 papers), and the first of the new
style invited reviews was published in issue 4 of 2002. Therefore,
the true influence of the changes in the journal over the last
few years needs further evaluation during the upcoming years.
Let us continue with our joint efforts to firmly establish
Human Reproduction Update as THE review journal in the broad area
of Reproductive Sciences.
